This book is on the India after 1991. Why inspite of the reforms, a huge educated working class, a heritage and culture that we are so proud of - the country refuses to take off. Chapter by Chapter, Mr Elliott examines what is wrong - the dynasty that did more damage than good in recent years, the chalta hai attitude, the jugaad solutions ( which we are so proud of ), the poor governance and corruption, a creaky dysfunctional democracy which is slowly converting us into a dystopian state. Compelling reading. The good thing about the non-Indian writers is that they write with a sense of detachment without prejudging anything. They present their case, detail out the facts, get into the whys and hows and leave it to us to draw our own conclusions. For all my Hyderabadi friends, we have a chapter dedicated to the scams of Andhra Pradesh and the role of all the Naidus, Reddys, Rajus who contributed to us earning the monicker 'Scam Andhra'...it almost rhymes with Seemandhra.
