James McDougall grew up in North-East England and studied at St Andrews and Oxford. He has taught history at Princeton University, SOAS, University of London, and the University of Oxford, where he became a Fellow of Trinity College in 2009. His work has taken him to France, the USA, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine and Israel, Egypt, Senegal, Germany, and Japan. He is especially interested in global history, the relations between culture and politics, colonial empires and their legacies, and different ways of thinking about history.
