Author Information:

I’m a freelance British journalist, writer and editor. I write long-form, reported features that often focus on the human impact of major world events. I cover a range of subjects, including politics, terrorism, inequality and gender. I’m currently based in London, but travel overseas frequently – in addition to writing about the UK, I’ve been reporting on Pakistan since 2011, and have also worked in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Kenya and Nigeria. I am the editor of the New Humanist magazine and regular contributor to the Guardian’s Long Read and Opinion sections. I write frequently for Al-Jazeera, Prospect and Deutsche Welle. My work has also appeared in a broad range of other publications, including the Times, the Independent, Vice, Monocle and Guernica. My reporting has been shortlisted for numerous awards, and in 2016 I was awarded the Richard Beeston bursary by the Times newspaper. I’ve twice been a media fellow with Columbia University’s Center for the Study of Social Difference. In 2019 I was a fellow with the MacDowell Colony, where I worked on my first book, Karachi Vice – due to be published by Granta in February 2021. My agent is Sophie Lambert at Conville and Walsh.
