Eamonn Gearon is the author of "The Sahara: A Cultural History." He has also contributed to "Meetings With Remarkable Muslims" (2005), "Sahara Overland" (2004 ed.), and "An Encyclopaedia of African History," (2004). He writes for the TLS, London Magazine, Daily Telegraph, History Today, Geographical and the Middle East Magazine, among others.
Under the tutelage of bedu in Egypt's Western Desert, Eamonn learnt the traditional skills needed to live and travel in the desert. He fondly remembers his three camels, Osama, Ibn Kelb and Baby, who made his solo explorations of the Sahara possible.
A Middle East specialist who has lived and worked from Kabul to Casablanca for the past 20 years, Eamonn uses the uncommon wisdom he has gathered from across the region to promote cross-cultural awareness, better security and mutual understanding.
