Sönke Iwersen is head of investigative reporting at Handelsblatt, one of Germany’s leading business newspapers. He has been named Business Journalist of the Year and has received numerous awards, including the Henri Nannen Prize, the Kurt Tucholsky Prize for literary journalism, and Germany’s leading press freedom award for investigative reporting, which he has won three times.
His work has uncovered major scandals, including the Ergo sex party affair, and since 2014, he has been investigating the Cum-Ex tax fraud case—one of the biggest financial scandals in Europe. In 2016, Iwersen gained international attention when he tracked down the people in Hong Kong who hid Edward Snowden after his disclosures. In 2019, he published an in-depth report on the Nazi past of Georg Berger, father of consultant Roland Berger.
Since 2022, Iwersen has been leading a major investigation into Tesla and Elon Musk. In March 2025, he and his Handelsblatt colleague Michael Verfürden published the book The Tesla Files.
