India presents an important case study of exclusionist extremism fueled by the Hindutva religio-political ideology. The trend of Hindutva has largely gone unnoticed because the Indian state covered it up with a fanciful word called democracy. Even the international community has, by and large, been indifferent to this rising extremism that has resulted in the prevailing ethno-sectarian tensions.It was in this context that IPS played host to an international seminar on the subject. The forum saw more than 20 presentations and speeches dilating upon a number of important themes including the concept and genesis of Hindutva, its economic and political dimensions, responses to it from within as well as from the world community.Hindutva – Rising Extremism in India documents the proceedings where the speeches have been edited and revised into articles with enhanced inputs by the expert contributors. As such the book provides an insightful understanding of Hindutva and its consequences not only for India but also the wider region.
