Author Information:

Born in Mumbai, Qamar Bharoocha Bana was raised in many parts of the subcontinent – Pakistan, India, Burma, and Bangladesh. In her early teens, her parents gifted her a Rolleiflex box camera which opened up a whole new world for her. Intermittent phases of photographing her brother, family events, and travel gradually turned into a very serious hobby. Her works have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Delhi, Germany, Istanbul, and Nairobi. In 2015 her photograph ‘The Hand’ was published as the cover for the book ‘Framing Peace’ published in New York. She has been invited to participate in the Florence Biennale. Her work is both narrative and documentary, finding herself moved by color, form, texture, and emotional resonance. This book is the culmination of her aspect of capturing the atmosphere of the moment. Qamar is a contributing artist to Karachi Biennale’s Karachi Art Directory. Qamar photographs people, faces, and environments – always with a focus on capturing the atmosphere. Here, she has captured a musician during Holi celebrations in Rajasthan, India. With a focus on ‘moments’ of form, light, and color, Qamar takes the everyday life of Karachi’s streets and turns them into extraordinary experiences for the viewer.
